Tropical, but temperatures vary considerably with altitude. Venezuela has dry and rainy seasons. Broadly speaking, the dry season goes from December to May while the rainy season lasts the remaining part of the year. There are many regional variations in the amount of rain and the length of seasons. During the wet season the llanos and forest areas are swampy, green, and lush. Upon the advent of the dry season, the same areas become dry, brown, and parched. There is perpetual snow on several peaks of the Cordillera de Mérida.
