Don’t you just love maps? I absolutely adore them, I can pour over them for hours, tracing every detail, planning journey routes, wandering down streets of unknown cities, reminiscing about past holidays and places visited. Maps are a necessary part of our lives, they relay visual information through which we can understand the world about us. We use them all the time, not only are there maps which give us geographical information but there are maps which tell us about the constellations and even about our state of mind.
Maps are also to some extent a product of our imagination. Each map designer has been influenced by their own political, cultural, social conditions and personal experiences.
Now showing at the V&A until April is an interesting exhibition entitled “Mapping the Imagination” The displays include maps that are there to inform us as well as maps that entertain us, maps of real and imaginary places. Susan Stockwell the Manchester born London based artist is just one of the exhibiters, she uses everyday  disposable materials and transforms them into objects of art.
