All over London you can come across picture galleries. They really are all around. Sometimes you end up thinking that there are too many and end up skipping their visit. But today I’m pointing one out, that you really must not miss - and the first reason is that the entrance is free.
Secondly, it isn’t at the centre of the city, so you won’t have to battle your way between thousands of foreign tourists or wait for hours to actually get in. It’s in the East of London, Rivington Place and it’s officially the first public gallery that has been opened in the last 40 years in Britain’s capital.
The idea comes from David Adjaye, who has decided to promote the initiative in order to encourage the dialogue between socio-geographic differences. the building also welcomes two institutes, that didn’t have a fixed base up until today: inIVA, the international institute of visual arts and Autograph ABP, a public agency of art.
Even the actual architecture is different to so many others. The design is something even more than modern, with windows that look as if the builder had had one glass too many (all different shapes and symmetries) with a mega final window. If you go there this time, you can see “States of Exchange”: an interesting collective exhibition featuring some of Cuba’s most exciting artists. So you really do get a multicultural vision of the world-big time!!
