Florida Storm Chasing They Way I Like It - Close To Home
April opened yesterday with no April Fool jokes in the weather department. The Florida native sea breeze boundaries went to work on the first day of April. The storms developed early along the east coast sea breeze boundary from about Melbourne southward into Ft Pierce. As these storms weakened, they helped enhance the sea breeze boundary with outflow that slowly continued to track inland. By late afternoon, new thunderstorms began to develop in Osceola and Okeechobee Counties. These storms would go on to produce small hail, impressive rainfall totals, and some strong winds for several hours.
I shot a quick time lapse (first in the video) from my front lawn as the northern lake boundary began to converge with the east coast boundary. Rock hard cumulus towers started to develop, and they blasted skyward, so I decide to hit the road and get myself into position for the developing storm. A drove north-northeastward into northeast Okeechobee County, and setup my tripod and camera and started to shoot a long time lapse (18 frames /min) of the now ongoing storm. This turned out to be a long hour time-lapse as the storms repeatedly would cycle through and redevelop while slowly moving south-southwest along the boundary. The storm showed signs of short-lived low-level rotation and some organized storm structure. It sustained itself much longer than I thought it would last, with warm moist inflow keeping it strong.
AT 448 PM EDT…NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DAMAGING WINDS IN EXCESS OF 60 MPH. THIS STORM WAS LOCATED 5 MILES NORTH OF FOUR SEASONS ESTATES…OR ABOUT 6 MILES NORTHEAST OF OKEECHOBEE.
Storm All Cranked Up On The Sea Breeze Boundary
The storm did have a severe thunderstorm warning for about a half hour, and this was true since I came into small hail several times during the storms lifetime. A few times during it’s more mature stages, there was a defined area of green hail hues just to the right of the updraft. Northwesterly upper level winds carried a few larger hail stones ( 0.50) down towards my location a few times when southeast of the storm. The lightning was vivid, and even saw a cool little rain-foot / microburst early in the storms life. After a few wall clouds and hail stones, the storm became outflow dominant and brought impressive widespread rains over much of the county well into the mid evening hours.
Watch The Video Scenes Of Yesterdays Storms
When watching the video I have provided of the storm, in the first time lapse, you can clearly see the rich low-level flow and towering Cumulus, with the northwesterly winds aloft streaming overhead. In the second time lapse scene, the camera is facing northwest at first and slowly pans with the southward moving mature storm. There are several other scenes of the storm during it’s afternoon tour along the east coast sea and lake breeze boundary. It was a nice start to the spring storm season for me, and really has me in the mood for some Supercell chasing in the Plains next month. It was great to see the sea breeze fired up, because this time last year, I was chasing wildfires and drought scenes. This early summer-like thunderstorm pattern looks to continue tomorrow and possibly into Thursday as well. I’ll be out there for sure getting in as much convective time as possible. Enjoy the video!
