Weather Beaten Harry in Stars & Stripes USA baseball cap

So Prince Harry is in sunny Afghanistan, and his cover has been blown so naturally the newspapers and TV are full of interviews with the warrior prince. Given that both the campaign in Afghanistan and the Prince himself have received some pretty poor PR in the past, some cynics are claiming this is simply an exercise in generating some positive press. Certainly Harry comes across very well in the interviews but why oh why is he wearing that baseball cap? It has the Stars & Stripes on the front! A sort of desert issue, sand camouflage, let's shoot some dusty locals, American flag yes, but unmistakeably an American flag.

Prince Harry BAseball Cap

It seems then this is not simply PR puff as this lapse in judgement would be extraordinary in a coordinated campaign. At a time when many believe that the UK is simply America's whipping dog it seems amazing that the media is awash with pictures and video footage of a senior British royal, and Army officer in uniform, sporting an American flag. At least when Harry was pictured in his now notorious Nazi fancy dress, it was at a private party, where some opportunist capitilized on a young man's lapse in judgement. These pictures and videos have been coordinated by the Army, with interviews conducted by "embedded" journalists.

The back of the cap apparently sports the legend “We do bad things to bad people”, a predictably gung-ho American sentiment, that perhaps a young and enthusiastic officer could be forgiven for finding amusing but it seems amazing that nobody thought to tell him to remove it for the money shots.

The hat was given to him by the operators of the 5th SFG. If you were a soldier and operators of that caliber gave you hat, you would probably wear it. He wore it as a sign of respect to these guys.

"guys that fight for freedom, yours, mine, the worlds", I would beg to differ. I only see more restrictions coming out of this war on terror, on ideas and for 'freedom'. I can no longer travel with a bottle of water, and even feel worried about travel because of my nationality (British) and this is all in the name of freedom? And to add to that how does imposing one person's idea of freedom on another's actually create freedom. People complain about China washing out their varied cultures with 'communism' (a lack of democracy?), for example issuing standard clothing to a nation instead of allowing them to keep their regional dress. Surely what China did in this case is not freedom (preventing people from doing something or wearing certain things), but if you think about it doesn't it sound similar to the USA & allies stance on you're not free until you're free the same way we are, i.e. the only democracy allowed is the American style of democracy.

I have a lot of respect for troops and armed forces at war or stationed in a peace keeping capacity but it does irritate me to hear people say it's in the name of freedom. It's not! It's in the name of oppression, economic and political. It's a war for the freedom of the rich & powerful and not the poor & helpless. Don't be mistaken in thinking that people are dying out there for freedom, they are dying out there because it's their job and they are being asked by high ranking people in the military and government to carry out the mission. It's an essential part of society and I can't imagine a world without armies, it's a shame that people think it's all in the name of freedom. It's in the name of someone's freedom but always at a price of someone else's freedom. There is normally a good and a bad side in any conflict but always remember that the position you sit it changes it all. If I grew up in Palestine and my parents were killed by Israeli action, Israel would be the bad guys. If I grew up in Israel and my parents were killed by a group of suicide bombers then the bombers would be the bad guys. Do not over simplify life. On the good side (US/Britian & allies) there are also bad guys, they send our husbands, fathers brothers and friends to war and are unwilling to take criticism over it. Wait, shouldn't criticism be encouraged if we are really free?

I hate the fact that people have died over the Iraq conflict. People on both sides have died, of these deaths some have been bad guys and some good guys. Not all the good guy deaths are on the same side. People on both sides are bad and thankfully people on both sides are also good. Let us pray for the good people regardless of side and hope that they can help stop this conflict. Be good yourself and concentrate on that, if we all get a better sense of good then we can be sure that good happens. Thinking about which side is good and which is bad leads to blind faith and then bad things happen, good people lead by bad people actually means that bad things are likely to happen. Don't think about them and us, just be good and encourage others to be good. The rest will follow.

It is a hat but it holds meaning to the guys that fight for freedom, yours, mine, the worlds. All it says is that if you threaten the freedoms of the US, Britan and many others, they will stand up for us and take care of business. They don't want to hurt innocent people..they are fighting to protect them, and bad people are those that threaten anyones freedom. Don't judge if you are not there fighting. We are losing our husbands, fathers, brothers and friends for all of you because they are trying to keep the "bad people" from hurting you and your loved ones. They ask nothing in return but support and respect. I saw a bumber sticker the other day that said "If you can get behind our troops and support them, then by all means, feel free to stand in front of them"! Harry stood on the front line, you should all be proud AND...take the words on the hat for what they really mean, they will fight for you and give their lives for you and they prove it everyday!

THE HAT

Good grief, its just a hat! Give the young man a break will you? He has alot of intestinal fortitude that is sorely lacking in most of todays youth!

The Hat

Anonymous 36 weeks 4 days 1 hour 50 min ago

It is just a hat. But to the men that serve the montra, it is much more. It says that they will protect you, those living in freedom and those oppressed to be spared the hurt and inhumanity of those who do evil deeds to keep you enslaved or imprisioned to their beleifs (as if no one has a right to decide what their beleifs should be).
It does not mean they feel all people are bad, in fact just the opposite, they work next to the locals, fighting for thier rights to have the same freedoms each of us has. You have the right to say what you will about the "hat" because our guys are willing to die for your rights.

Instead of trying to read something into the words that isn't there...support him and our troops in harms way. I saw a bumber sticker today that read "If you can't get behind our troops and support them, then by all means, feel free to stand in front of them." Are you willing to die for your country? Until you have stood in their shoes, be proud and be thankful, for if not for them you could be enslaved or imprisioned to their beleifs with no choice to the contrary! De Oppresso Libor... Liberate the oppresed...Happy Freedom! They do bad things to bad people so you can sleep soundly in your be each night, shower each day and enjoy your freedoms without living in fear!

WHY HE WEARS THE HAT

Anonymous 44 weeks 3 days 5 hours 6 min ago

Prince Harry wears the hat because he realizes our relationship. When the shit hits the fan in this world, We are here for You and You are here for US. There is nothing wrong with that.

Can you imagine a son of a US president going to war? Or would he be draft dodging as seems usual US politicians off spring?

Its a f*cking hat - get over it! Maybe he'd rather wear that scruffy thing rather than spilt his issues uniform cap ;)

Presidential Sons in Combat

Anonymous 44 weeks 2 days 4 hours 9 min ago

In a simple search of the topic I found the following very easily.

David and John Tyler, Robert Taylor, and Charles Johnson all fought for the Confederacy.

Robert Lincoln saw service for the Union.

Frederick Grant was wounded at Vicksburg during the Civil War before he even entered military service.

Webb Hayes received the medal of honor for his service in the Philippines campaign of the Spanish-American war.

Quentin Roosevelt died in WWI, and 2 other Roosevelts were wounded in the war.

Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. landed with the first wave at Normandy.

All 4 sons of FDR saw active combat duty during WWII.

John Eisenhower served in Korea.

Though I agree it is a just a hat.

History

Anonymous 44 weeks 2 days 14 hours 25 min ago

Actually sons of presidents do have a history of going to war. Check your history before typing. As for the cap, as an American I would not be offended at all if a fighting American was sporting a British flag. We are both on the same side you do relize.

The US/UK Special Relationship!

Yo Blair! Yo Wales! Bend over!
Can you really imagine the son of a US president wheeled out in front of the media to talk about serving on the frontline and sporting a Union Jack on his cap?! Of course not, beggars belief!
