Cosmopolitan flair, impressive architecture, a diversified programme of events as well as a central location: Slovenia’s lively capital city – Ljubljana – has been gaining in popularity, particularly among city trip tourists.
In addition to innumerable modernistic masterpieces by the architect Jože Plečnik, who was born there, the medieval castle of Ljubljana is regarded as a special tourist attraction and the city’s landmark. Since December of last year, visitors to the castle have had the option of gliding up to the fortification from Krek Square in the Old Town in comfort via the new, fully glassed in funicular railway.
The baroque Old Town surrounding the base of the castle is encircled by the banks of the Ljubljanica River and its narrow streets and lanes can best be explored on foot. Visitors will experience a colourful “feast for the eye” in the covered Plečnik market arcades, where greengrocer women from the surrounding countryside and farmers from the coastal region offer fruit and vegetables in traditional costumes every day except for Sundays. From there it is not very far to another highlight of the city, the name of which means “sweetheart” or “mistress”: Three Bridges (Tromostovje) is one of the most elegant structures by Plečnik, who designed it with the aim of infusing Ljubljana with some of its former Venetian flair.
After exploring the impressive sights of the city, visitors can take a breather in the Old Town, as well as in numerous cafés and restaurants along the banks of the river. They can enjoy the country’s typical cuisine, as well as international specialities. After fortifying themselves, they can sample the city’s night life, including the “in” area along Metelkova ulica, which not only derives its lifeblood from the 50,000 students of Ljubljana.
The Slovenian capital city is also permeated with a lively and dynamic atmosphere thanks to about 10,000 cultural events that dot the events calendar every year. Until the end of September, the downtown area is livened up by numerous open-air events, such as free canoe rides on the Ljubljanica River, the “Library under the Treetops” or mythical figures serving as real-life sign-posts for visitors unfamiliar with the city.
While guided tours of the city on foot and by panorama train are offered throughout the year, from spring until early autumn travellers can also experience Ljubljana from the “duck perspective”: by taking a boat tour. The tourist boats depart from the landing stage at Ribji trg Square for one-hour tours with Slovenian and English language guides.
Incidentally, a visit to the “City of Love” is a real bargain with the Ljubljana Card: the tourist pass, which is valid for three days and costs 12.52 Euros, offers card holders about 100 special discounts. These include everything from free transportation on city buses and free entrance to most museums to discounts in participating restaurants, hotels or shops.
